| 2-1/2 cups | all purpose flour, sifted | 600 mL |
| 1-1/2 tsp | baking soda | 7 mL |
| 1 tsp | ground ginger | 5 mL |
| 1 tsp | ground cinnamon | 5 mL |
| 1/2 tsp | ground cloves | 2 mL |
| 1/2 tsp | salt | 2 mL |
| 1/2 cup | shortening and butter, mixed | 125 mL |
| 1/2 cup | sugar | 125 mL |
| 1 | egg | 1 |
| 1 cup | molasses | 250 mL |
| 1 cup | hot water | 250 mL |
Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C.
Sift together dry ingredients.
Cream shortening and butter and sugar. Add beaten egg and molasses. Add dry ingredients.
Add hot water last and beat until smooth.
Pour batter in a greased and floured 8-in/20-cm square pan.
Bake for approximately 45 minutes or until done.
