Ingredients

3 eggs 3
1/2 cup granulated sugar 125 mL
2 tsp vanilla 10 mL
  pinch salt  
2 1/2 cups milk 600 mL
4 cups small pieces of slightly dry white bread 1 L
1 cup raisins 250 mL
1 tsp cinnamon 5 mL

Directions

In bowl, combine eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt; beat until light and fluffy. Add milk; stir to blend well.

In greased 8-cup/2-L baking dish, place bread, then raisins in alternating layers. Pour egg mixture on top. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Place dish in shallow pan of hot water. Bake in oven at 350°F/180°C for 45 minutes or until top is slightly crusty and knife inserted in centre comes out clean.

Serve warm, with cream or maple syrup if desired.
